Alert: Another Facebook Rogue app to look out for
Jan 30th
The rogue Facebook apps continue. This time the warning is about an app labeled as haha or hahatoyourself. It will appear on a page of someone you know, and may even include a direct message to you saying
Heyy (insert your name here), what are you doing in this video? LOL Embarrassing!
The scam may also list as
Look at you HaHa!
and look like a video post.
In both cases, DO NOT CLICK ON THE LINK, the links will attempt to install a rogue app on to your account. If you have clicked on the links already, you will want to do the following
- Remove the posts from your account
- Check the allowed 3rd party applications
You really need to check and see what 3rd party applications have access to your Facebook account. There are many apps in Facebook that people find useful, at the same time, many other Facebook apps are just there to steal your data, or use your account in ways that you don’t want.
To check your Privacy settings for 3rd party apps, click on account (on the top right of Facebook) and then click on Privacy settings.
(http://www NULL.techgeekandmore NULL.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/image24 NULL.png)
- Now (in the lower left corner) select Apps and websites, where it says “Edit your settings”
(http://www NULL.techgeekandmore NULL.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/image25 NULL.png)
- This will take you to the Apps and Websites page where you should remove any app that you either do NOT recognize or that you no longer use
- *Run a full scan on your pc with Malwarebytes or SuperAntiSpyware to check your pc.
- If you need to download either you can download them from www.ninite.com (http://www NULL.ninite NULL.com)
- *Run a full scan on your pc with your Antivirus Software.
- If you don’t currently have an active Antivirus program, you can download a FREE Antivirus program from www.ninite.com (http://www NULL.ninite NULL.com). (Tech Geek and More recommends Microsoft Security Essentials) If you have an old Antivirus program that is expired, you should remove it prior to installing the new Antivirus software.
(*Make sure you update the program prior to running it)
Software: Windows – Optimize your computer for peak performance
Jan 24th
People think a pc is like a TV, just there, you click on the power button and it turns on, and that all you need to do. In fact that is wrong, a computer needs to be treated more like a car than a TV. You should be doing the pc equivalent of an oil change and tune up, so that you can get the most out of your pc.
The following tips can help improve your computer’s performance. These examples are for Windows 7, Windows Vista, and Windows XP. However, you’ll find that these tips work for all versions of the Windows operating system.
By the way, it is not possible for you to blow up your computer or your files with any of these procedures. These tasks use utilities provided within the Windows operating system to help you to achieve the best system performance. This article does not address tinkering with the registry files
Microsoft at home has a great article with tips on what you should be doing. “Optimize your computer for peak performance”. Hardware: (From Microsoft at Home) How to clean your computer
Jan 24th
As a tech I’m still surprised at what I find when I open up customers pc’s for upgrades or repairs. I have seen everything from enough lint to make a sweater all the way to small furry creatures (Keep in mind, the creatures have not all been dead). Microsoft at Home has a post out this morning with 5 basic how to steps to keep your machine clean, and happy.
Remember, a pc needs to be treated like a car, that goes for both software and hardware. These 5 steps are just one more thing you really should do to your pc, just like taking your car in for an oil change or to rotate the tires.
The following is from “How to clean your pc”
I have a dirty secret. I’ve never cleaned my computer. Sure, I’ve dusted my monitor, but I haven’t taken off the cover or tried to reach the crumbs lurking inside my keyboard. And I honestly don’t know the difference between pressurized air dusters and compressed air cleaners.
“Your computer could fry if you don’t keep it clean,” says Jonathon Millman, chief technology officer for Hooplah Interactive.
Whether it’s a desktop or laptop/notebook computer, dust and lint can clog the cooling vents. This can cause your computer’s brain—the central processing unit (CPU)—to heat up. And heat is the biggest cause of component failure in computers. Regular cleaning could save you costly maintenance fees down the road.
Follow the five simple steps (http://www NULL.microsoft NULL.com/athome/setup/cleancomputer NULL.aspx#3) in the cleanup and maintenance routine below to keep your computer and accessories looking shiny and new. It’s an easy, do-it-yourself solution to help them run smoothly and last longer.

IMS Software Tool: I-Manage (Automated Systems Management)
Jan 20th
Technically capable and proactive support of POS installations has long been a defining asset of IMS. Help desk calls are responded to and measured in real-time, ensuring that our customers are able to spend more time ringing sales and managing their operations than worrying about the technical details of their systems. To enhance how our customers are supported, we have developed a pro-active support tool – I-Manage – that alerts IMS’ Help Desk about problems before our customers ever detect them. I-Manage monitors our customers’ systems and sends alerts to our help desk, which in turn can remotely repair or notify a customer of an issue before it becomes a problem.

Tip: How to Fax from Retail Pro v8
Jan 19th
We have received many calls about being able to fax from Retail Pro. The following steps will allow you to fax directly from Retail pro v8.
REQUIREMENTS:
Operating systems; Will work with Windows 2000 professional, Windows XP professional
Hardware:
A working modem
Suggestion:
The windows Faxing utility works very well with Windows Address Book, or Microsoft Outlook. To access the Windows Address Book Click > Start > All Programs > Accessories > Address Book. If you find the Windows Address Book useful, you will want to create a shortcut to the address book on your desktop. The Windows Address Book is easy to use and most questions could be answered by using the Help Menu.
Also, the default windows fax utility is a good option, however Retail Pro will work with other faxing software utilities, such as Symantec’s WinFax software. Or, some Multifunction printer/faxes have the ability to fax directly instead of printing the document. However, these directions do not reflect those options.
How to fax from Retail Pro v8:
1) Make sure The Retail Pro Printing preference for your documents allows you to change the printer at the time of wanting to print the document.
2) After creating the document click on the print button.
3) Choose your Document design.
4) From the “Print Document” dialog box click the “Preview” button.
5) After the document’s preview is shown, click the “Print” icon along the tool bar.
6) From the Print Dialog box, pick the “Fax” as the printer type.
7) Retail Pro will attempt a print. The Send Fax Wizard window will come up. Click “Next” to continue.
Fill in the “Recipient Information” or, use the Address Book to find your contact information.
9) You may want to use a Cover Page.
10) You can Schedule the fax to be sent out or you can choose to send it at that moment
11) After clicking on next you have completed the wizard. Click on “Finish”
TIP: “Workstation already in use”, "polling in use", "workstation locked," or "workstation in use" error when using Retail Pro
Jan 15th
There are times when you may see one of the following messages during your use of Retail Pro
- Workstation already in use
- Polling in Use
- Workstation Locked
- Workstation in use
Some of the most common causes are:
1) System shut down while in RPRO accidently, intentionally or due to power outage.
2) Someone enters system preferences when other workstations are in Retail Pro.
3) Process in/out takes places when Retail Pro is open on other workstations
4) Retail Pro locked up and was forced to shut down using CTRL-ALT-DEL.
The following steps will normally resolve these error messages (Make sure everyone is out of Retail Pro during the time you are trying these steps):
In Version 7
- Click on “Preferences”, then “System”.
- If “Remove Locks” message appears, select “Yes”.
- If message above does NOT appear, Click on “Preferences”, then “Workstation”.
Version 8
- Click on “Tools”, then “RproDB”, then click on OK to accept the changes.
If that does not clear the issue, contact the IMS Support Desk (800-882-0627) for additional assistance.
Announcement – Retail Pro Reveals Major Plans For Greater Flexibility, Improved TCO And Real-time Processing Through The Launch Of ‘Aruba’ At NRF
Jan 11th
*International Micro Systems (IMS) as a Retail Pro Partner would like to pass along the latest Press release from Retail Pro.
NEW YORK, Jan. 11 /PRNewswire/ — Retail Pro achieved a major milestone today launching phase 1 of project “Aruba” at the National Retailers Federation conference. “Aruba” is the internal project name that demonstrates Retail Pro’s serious commitment to delivering products that are flexible to fit the unique needs of today’s retailers while also lowering total cost of ownership as Aruba was designed to work within the current hardware and infrastructure of today’s retailers.
“We are extremely excited about project Aruba on a number of different levels,” said Retail Pro CEO, Kerry Lemos. “Aruba marks a collaborative effort with our Customer and Partner Advisory Groups that provided essential input on current customer needs. Our customers were looking for a solution that can immediately meet their unique business needs and processes while improving total cost of ownership (TCO). Through thin-client architecture that runs on a centralized, organizational structure, Aruba delivers on those needs.”
Project Aruba marks the first step toward the next generation of Retail Pro software. The first release, scheduled to be completed later this year, calls for a thin-client architecture that can be easily deployed with reduced hardware or infrastructure requirements that can be seamlessly integrated with existing versions of Retail Pro. The ultimate vision provides the power of choice for customers by creating a solution that can be deployed either on-premise or in the cloud via SaaS deployment to deliver what customers want: ease of use, reduced acquisition and maintenance costs, faster deployment and real-time data.
Lemos ended by saying, “At Retail Pro we are serious about delivering on our customers’ needs and are committed to providing the best technology to our thousands of domestic and multinational customers. Aruba demonstrates that we are on track and poised for a very successful 2010. We couldn’t ask for a better way to bring in the New Year.”
Retail Pro invites you to join in the excitement by visiting booth #1844 at NRF near the Customer Experience Pavilion. You won’t want to miss it!

Announcement – The Pedowitz Group and IMS Form Strategic Partnership
Jul 21st
ATLANTA, GA, Jul 21 (MARKET WIRE) —
The Pedowitz Group, the world’s largest and most experienced provider of marketing automation services that help marketers plan, attract and grow revenue, today announced a strategic partnership with International Micro Systems, Inc. (IMS), the inventor and industry’s largest and most experienced provider of Event Revenue Optimization and Value Added Ticketing systems.
The combined partnership will offer innovative ticketing and marketing solutions for sports and entertainment clients, transforming the way that fans are engaged and communicated with. Additionally, it will revolutionize the packaging of sponsorship programs, allowing teams, stadiums, and arenas to offer more versatile packages and increase revenue while providing sponsors with a greater return on investment.
Value Added Ticketing enhances the fan experience while giving venues the ability to increase revenue. It’s a convenient way for patrons to pay for admission, concessions, merchandise, parking, and tickets for future games — all with the same ticket.
STADIS software from IMS integrates ticketing with concession, merchandise, and parking point of sale systems to enable cashless transactions. When purchasing a ticket, the venue/team/sponsor may bundle value or the buyer has the option to add additional value onto the ticket for use inside the facility. The patron can then redeem the ticket’s stored value by presenting it for parking, concessions, merchandise, or tickets to a future event. The barcode on the ticket is scanned by the point-of-sale system for redemption. Aside from the convenience to the ticket buyer, the venue benefits from selling the admission ticket and stored value, in advance, as a package in a single transaction.
The SWEET software platform from The Pedowitz Group offers interactive SMS messaging, full social media integration with Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn, and marketing automation. The platform will allow venues and teams to offer innovative in-event promotions that immediately add value to a ticket, increase fan engagement, drive more per cap revenue and boost sponsorship sales. Sponsors for the first time will be able to receive specific responses to their advertisements and quantify their investment in actual redemption, not just impressions.
"We are very excited to partner with IMS," said Jeff Pedowitz, President and CEO of The Pedowitz Group. "The IMS STADIS platform allows us to expand our footprint in the sports and entertainment vertical. Our combined offering is unlike anything this industry has ever seen, and it will provide significant value for venues, teams, sponsors, and of course, the fan."
"This is a very important partnership for us," said Jim Shrader, President and CEO of IMS. "For several years we have helped multiple venues and teams increase value through Event Revenue Optimization. Combined with marketing services, we can now offer sports and entertainment clients a true 360 degree approach to increasing revenue and fan engagement."
